File Browser:
File Browser on DSM provides easy file navigation on your Desktop, allowing you to move or copy files without boundaries.

Extend your Windows® or Mac® experience on File Browser without learning curve. File Browser is launched in individual Windows® under the same web browser. You can easily copy, move, delete, rename, upload or download files from DiskStation with the help of File Browser. Nothing is out of the ordinary, everything is expected.
Drag-n-Drop File Transfer on Web Browser
The easiest way to move a file is to drag it from one window to another. While this was originally enjoyed on your computer’s operating system, now find it on the Synology DiskStation Manager.
You can manage all your data stored on DiskStation by dragging and dropping your favorite music, movies, photos, or work projects between File Browser folders. In addition, the integration of the HTML5 technology even lets you upload the file directly from your local PC onto File Browser in the same drag-n-drop manner, totally eliminating time spent on repeating the tedious upload process.
Search with Advanced Precision
The advanced search tool is now available to offer numerous options, which helps to make your search more precise. Type in keywords, updated time, or file owner to narrow down the search and there you have the results within seconds.
While you may think filtering through a large pool of data takes a long time. File Browser can prove otherwise. It significantly reduces the search time by performing database index to file names. A well-organized file name index is like a list in the back of a book, which greatly improves data retrieval speed and helps users find the result they want more quickly.
Watch the Scene and Motion
While the increased storage space is a good thing for you to store more files, sometimes finding the exact one you are looking for can be a tiresome task. The embedded Photo Viewer and Video Player will help you to directly preview your digital content in the DiskStation Manager, helping to locate a file you need within a very short time.
You can right click on the picture and preview your photo by Photo Viewer. You can browse, rotate, delete, and examine EXIF and XMP information of a picture. To bring in more flexibility, scroll your muse to zoom in and out so details of a photo can be better seen. You are able to start a slide show in the Photo Viewer as well. In addition, the photo slideshow would automatically play the photos that are placed within the same folder, so it becomes quite convenient to organize your photo folders.
The embedded Video Player in the File Browser is just like any other video player. You can right click on a video and preview it in the Video Player if you had VLC™ player installed on your computer. You can also choose different aspect ratio between 50%, 100% and 200% to view the video. Video Player also supports embedded and external subtitle.
Access Your Cloud Files with Google Docs™
Without installing office software to open your documents on your DiskStation, now you can preview the documents on your DiskStation by Google Docs™ service. All files formats supported by Google Docs™ can now be opened for preview in your web browser, including Adobe® PDF, PowerPoint®, Word®, Excel® and many of the formats that you would encounter daily.
Edit Your Pictures On-the-Spot
You can do many things on the File Browser, like uploading and moving files in between folders, or previewing documents, photos and videos. Now you can even edit your photos right on File Browser with Pixlr™ Editor, Pixlr™ Express and Picnik™. The steps are simple, just right click on a photo to call up the app you prefer, then you can easily make a few changes of your liking and send it back to your DiskStation.
File Station Offers Discrete Security & Privacy
Besides File Browser, you can also transfer and upload files with an alternative solution. File Station can operate under a different network port to prevent users from accessing DSM’s management interface for security concerns. For extended security, HTTPS is supported for secure access. It is also customizable to match corporate or organizational requirements.

DSM offers several flexible options for data storage and sharing among Windows®, Mac®, and Linux® clients. Windows® users can access the server via SMB/CIFS (Windows® My Network Places), FTP, and WebDAV; Mac® users via SMB, FTP, AFP, and WebDAV; Linux® users via SMB, FTP, NFS, and WebDAV. UTF-8 support allows users to share files in different languages across operating systems.
CIFS Network Recycle Bin
When the CIFS Recycle Bin is enabled, files deleted via Windows® CIFS protocol will be automatically moved into the CIFS Recycle Bin.

FTP:
Synology DiskStation eliminates the requirement of advanced FTP knowledge for Internet file sharing. Manually installing a FTP server is now a past problem. Synology’s user-friendly UI guides you through the FTP setup process. With just a few clicks, FTP service will be established.
Advanced FTP options allow you to assign a specific port number, limit maximum connections from each IP, permit anonymous account logins, control file transfer bandwidth, allow only SSL/TLS encrypted connections, and view a record of file transferring activities in a log.

One Portal to Manage Files on Remote Destinations
The concept is similar to mapping a network drive onto a Windows® client, but in the case of Synology DiskStation it’s a folder – whether it’s a shared folder or a sub-folder – on a server that can be mounted onto another DiskStation via CIFS protocol.
The mounting can be done easily on the File Browser, which creates a shortcut to the remote folder. Data on the remote folder can be accessed and managed as if it were a local folder within the DiskStation, allowing business to build a single, centralized access portal to multiple remote destinations. The Alternative Way for Remote File Access and File Editing
